Long Tailed Lizard & Anole Diet
Long Tailed Lizards and Anoles eat mainly crickets, with the occasional worm, fly, or intermittent commercial food. Young lizards will eat several crickets daily while adults will only need to eat every other day. Vitamin and calcium supplements also help to ensure good health. A shallow dish of clean water should be provided.
Long Tailed Lizard & Anole Habitat
The habitat for these lizards should at least be 15 Gallons or more, even larger if there are more than 1 lizards in an enclosure. Bigger is better, though, because of their level of activity. A tight-fitting lid is necessary for these extremely agile creatures. Mulch, moss, forest bark, or maybe reptile carpet can make fine substrates. Sand or wood chips are not ideal for this reptile. Make sure there are plenty of branches, bark platforms, plants, and vines for hiding and exercise. Lizards shed their skin on a regular basis, so keep humidity levels well-regulated and provide things that aid in the process of shedding such as sphagnum moss or a shedding box. Temperatures for basking hours should range from 90-95°F while the cooler end of the habitat remains near 75-85°F. Humidity can be between 70-75% with daily misting. At night, the temperatures can be from 65-70°F. Heat lamps and ceramic heaters can be used at any time, with UVB/UVA lighting 10-12 hours daily. Typically, they can be housed in small groups, with males kept separately, but never with other reptile species.
Are Long Tailed Lizards or Anoles Right for Me?
These cute little guys are full of energy and very exciting to watch! They even can become accustomed to occasional, gentle handling by their caregiver. However, it is never a good idea to grip them tightly or grab them by the tail as their bodies are fairly fragile and the tail may be dropped in defense. Also, any reptile is capable of carrying diseases such as Salmonella, so always washing your hands after touching your pet or any of its habitat items/substances is a must. For this reason, small children and pregnant women should not handle these pets or their associated items/substances. If you want an entertaining and playful reptile that can occasionally be handled, then this pet may be for you, though! With responsibility and care, the Long Tailed Lizard or Anole can become a wonderful cold-blooded companion.
