About Great Danes:
This is a friendly, spirited, and gentle breed for its size. It interacts well with people and very good with children. A male may be domineering with other male dogs. This is a good watchdog that can be very intimidating. This breed requires obedience training. Although known as the Great Dane, this breed is not Danish, but of German origin. It descended from an old game dog at least 400 years ago. This giant was originally bred as a wild-boar hunter. It is extremely popular in many countries in the world, as it is truly handsome, and it is known as the Apollo of the dogs. It is not exclusively a pet, but is also used as a watchdog.
Care and Exercise:
Short coat needs minimal care. Bathe as necessary. Whiskers are normally trimmed for show. With proper exercise, nails are worn down by themselves; if necessary, shorten further with file. Correct nutrition is very important with the giant breeds: Provide a palatable, well-balanced diet. To prevent bloat, feed 3 small meals a day rather than 1 large meal. In addition, restrict exercise and water consumption immediately before and for 1 hour after feeding. Food dish should be raised up off the floor so that the Dane does not have to go down on its knees to eat. This is more comfortable for the dog and encourages correct posture. This large breed needs unconstrained exercise, especially as a puppy. A large, well-fenced yard is essential to protect young dogs from road accidents or dog-napping. After 12 months, give moderate roadwork—at a speed of 10 mph—using a bicycle or a car. Or provide long walks on a leash several times a day. Should have obedience training.
Recommended Households:
Not for everyone, the Great Dane requires a family of dedicated people. Its needs for space, nutrition, and obedience training must be met. To own a Dane is to accept a large responsibility. It does far better in the country than in the city, although in recent years, Great Danes have appealed to loft-dwellers who want to discourage robbers.
