About Boxers:
A fun-loving, energetic dog whose energy seems to have no bounds and is always ready for anything. A very intelligent and alert watchdog. A male Boxer may challenge other males, and can become a neighborhood bully. The Boxer requires careful obedience training and should never be permitted to wander free. The Boxer gets its name from the way it positions its front legs in play—just as a human boxer does when sparring in the ring. This fighting pose is hardly coincidental, for the Boxer descends from a long line of Bulldog types that were common in medieval Europe. It is related to the English Bulldog and the Great Dane, as well as the Mastiff of Tibet, whose history goes back thousands of years. Like the Bulldog, the Boxer was originally bred to participate in the blood sports of dogfights and bullbaiting. The ferocious temperament has been removed, and the Boxer is today an excellent, even-tempered family dog. Highly intelligent, it has also been used as a guide dog for the blind, and some Boxers have been trained for police work.
Care and Exercise:
Smooth, shiny coat is easily cared for. Nails should be kept clipped. Feed a balanced diet and do not allow pet to become fat. This very eager, bouncy breed needs to express its exuberance and get plenty of exercise. A large, well-fenced yard is ideal, and walks on a leash are beneficial.
Recommended Households:
This breed has many admirers. It does well in homes in both rural areas and urban settings. Although the Boxer’s short coat is easily cared for, it cannot withstand inclement weather for long periods. A Boxer is not content to sit in the sun and snooze; this is a breed for active people.
