About American Eskimos:

The American Eskimo is an exceptionally alert, robust and companionable dog. It is playful, eager to please, and exceptionally intelligent. Normally, it is a one-family breed that is wary of strangers. The American Eskimo is highly alert, and an excellent watchdog. Among the oldest dog breeds, the American Eskimo belongs to the group of northern sled dogs that descended from the peat dog, a breed that lived among the New Stone Age lake dwellers. Remains of these dogs, dating back some 6000 years, have been found in the Soviet Union, Finland, Lapland, Scandinavia, and Germany. The strong hunting instinct of most of the other Nordic breeds has been replaced in the American Eskimo by a guarding ability. The United Kennel Club first recognized the American Eskimo in 1913. For many years it was relatively rare, but in the last decade it has grown in popularity and number.

Care and Exercise:

Normally needs only weekly brushing, but brush more frequently in spring and summer, when dog sheds heavily. Bathe once a month or as needed: The white coat contains a natural oil that repels soil, and this breed does not have the odor problems of many longhaired breeds, so bathing is not required as often as one might think. The American Eskimo enjoys active exercise and roughhousing. Daily runs in a fenced-in backyard are sufficient. If kept in a city, dog needs long walks on leash and occasional free runs in the country.

Recommended Households:

The American Eskimo’s keen wit and gentle temperament make it an excellent, obedient dog. It learns quickly. While playful with children, it will bark aggressively to announce intruders. The Eskie enjoys cold weather better than warm, but is adaptable to almost any region. As long as it is near its family, it will be happy either in an apartment or on a farm.
