Swordtails
The swordtail is a vibrant, beginner-friendly tropical fish species that is easy to care for and maintain. These hardy fish come in an variety of captivating colors and can be kept in a freshwater tank as small as 10 gallons. They are one of the most well-known beginner community fish species, who can get along with a wide array of other fish, have a high tolerance for various water conditions, and are adaptable to different environments.
One of the most notable features of swordtail fish is their distinctive sword-like extension on their lower tail fin, thus their name! The males normally possess this elegant, elongated tail, while females have a shorter, more rounded tail. The males' swords have developed and become longer over time as a way to attract the females.
They are also active swimmers, always exploring their surroundings and engaging in courtship displays... including swimming alongside females, showcasing their vibrant colors, and waggling their sword-like tails to attract attention.
Fun Facts: along with Mollies, Guppies, and Platy's, the Swordtail is a member of the Poeciliidae family of live-bearing tooth-carps, which are distinguished by having teeth in both their upper and lower jaws; they also give live birth rather than lay eggs!
Swordtail fish are known for their peaceful and friendly temperament, making them excellent community fish. They generally coexist peacefully with other non-aggressive species, such as tetras, mollies, and guppies. However, it’s important to avoid keeping them with fin-nipping fish or aggressive tankmates that may damage their delicate fins.
These fish are prone to jumping, so keep the tank well covered, especially around the filter, as it is instinct for them to seek out current, swim against it, and try to jump over it. What's more, like many other live bearing fish, swordtails can create quite a bit of waste so it is a good idea to use an efficient filtration system and ensure the bottom layers of the tank are clean. A well-maintained aquarium with proper filtration, regular water changes, and a balanced diet will ensure the health and well-being of your swordtail fish.
Swordtails are colorful and active, great for aquarium hobbyists from beginner to advanced, and can cheer up any tank with their hues and lively behavior! Now, until 11/13/23, you can get Select Swordtails on sale for only $2.99 at Uncle Bill's Pet Centers with your Extra Value Card!
