Facts and Information
Juveniles lack the intense coloration of the adults, so small specimens are often overlooked. The bright red color of the adult makes for a striking addition to the aquarium when kept in a school of six or more. Actually, the more, the merrier. If you can afford the space for two dozen, then by all means! The genus name for these fish (Aphyocharax) comes from the Greek words "aphye" (sardine, anchovy) and "charax" (a little marine fish).
